Kathakali, an expressive form of Indian dance-drama originated in the South Indian state of Kerala over 500 years ago. It is a spectacular combination of drama, dance, music and ritual. Characters with vividly painted faces and elaborate costumes re-enact stories from the Hindu epics, Mahabharath and Ramayana.

Being an extremely demanding art form, to successfully enact roles, a Kathakali artist must possess immense concentration, skill and stamina, gained from extensive, very specialised training based on Kalaripayatu, the ancient martial art of Kerala. Drummers, singers, makeup artists and unique costumes complete the ensemble of highly trained specialists performing Kathakali.
